MARY J. BLIGE
Mary J. Blige
When you think about R&B, often times you think about artists like Jodeci, Alicia Keys, Tyrese Gibson, Mariah Carey and many more. However, one name that especially comes to mind is the incomparable Mary J. Blige. This soulful singer has made over 10 studio albums since 1992. She also wears many hats as a mode, actress, producer and songwriter. This multi-talented woman is a force to be reckoned with.
Mary J. Blige got her start in the music industry as a background singer for Uptown Records. She then released her first studio album entitled, What’s the 411, just three years later. The head of production of Blige’s album was Sean “Puffy” Combs. Combs worked hard to get Blige well established as a leading lady in R&B. Blige is known for her unique sound, as it was unlike any other artist at the time. Her style was also unique as she did not conform to the popular dazzling style of most other R&B female artists.
Some of Blige’s most popular and successful songs include: Everything, Just Fine, My Life, Not Gon’ Cry, Be Without You, Real Love, I’m going down, and many more. Mary J. Blige has won a total of eight Grammys and has been nominated for a whopping thirty (30) Grammy nominations. Additionally, eight of Blige’s eleven total studio albums have gone multi-platinum. With over fifty million albums sold, this R&B singer has been donned the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.” As mentioned earlier, Blige has also established herself as an actress appearing in works such as The Jamie Foxx Show, Moesha, Entourage, I Can Do Bad All By Myself and Black Nativity. I think it is safe to say that Mary J. Blige is simply Iconic.
