Rae Sremmurd took home the Best Group award at the 2015 BET Awards this past weekend and for good reason too! The group is composed of two members who happen to be brothers, Khalif and Aaquil Brown. The duo has a very unique sound that makes their music somewhat infectious. Kyle Kramer of noisey.vice.com has stated that they “rap and sing in raspy high-pitched voices;” this specific sound contributes to what makes Rae Sremmurd different from other Hip Hop artists. They are rapidly gaining popularity as a novel Hip Hop duo.
Their singles “No Flex Zone” and “No Type” can be credited for the groups skyrocketing popularity as these two singles went platinum since being released in 2014. Rae Sremmurd is also quickly making waves with more music featuring major artists such as Nicki Minaj.
The group started out producing their own music at home in Tupelo, Mississippi. Khalif and Aquil sponsored themselves as they traveled out of state to different contests and performances in hopes of gaining recognition; they landed a couple of meetings with some major label representatives during their time on the road. However, the group ended up signing with Mike Will Made It’s label Ear Drummers Entertainment in early 2014. Their album SremmLife was then released about a year later, debuting at number five on the Billboard 200 album chart.
Quickly following the release of “No Flex Zone,” the group’s single was rapidly gaining attention not only by mass audiences, but also by established artists, such as Nicki Minaj and Pusha T, who released their own official remix to the single. Other remixes including big artists such as Busta Rhymes and Kid Ink were also released. With the advent of this new found popularity, the single peaked at thirty-six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Rae Sremmurd’s single “No Type” proved to be their most popular song yet as the single peaked at number sixteen on the Billboard charts.
In addition to entertaining music, Rae Sremmurd also gives great performances. In fact, I myself had the pleasure of watching one of their performances this past spring. Let me tell y’all, this group does not disappoint! I mean, they are incredibly entertaining; the duo is fun, energetic and engaging. The crowd was singing along to every one of their songs that they performed. They were highly interactive as well, inviting several fans on stage to dance and sing along. It was a really good performance all together. Y’all should absolutely keep an eye out for this group; I am sure that more success is still to come!
